There is only one word for this quilt … masterful. Okay there is another word … stunning.  Okay, maybe one more … mesmerizing.

There is not a single mis-step in the design of this quilt.  It deserves a long session of study just to understand why the values work as well as they do together.  Careful placement of lights and darks and mediums together create a wonderful sense of depth.  And the piecing is so beautifully executed.

As I look at it I am reminded of how unforgiving working with solids can be. This quilter was not deterred by that.  I think she deserves a standing ovation for this one.  What about you, what do you like about this one?

  1. I’ve always loved square in a square blocks, but never imagined them in a trip around the world setting….and then she jiggled it up a bit with placement, focused on that center block, and gave this quilt a heartbeat! Those royal blue centers sizzle, and I can’t take my eyes off of it! Even my husband, walking past my screen this morning, said, “Wow! That’s beautiful!”….that rarely happens! Yep, this one is going on the list!

Wow! Love the story about your husband’s response. So hard to know which of these I would tackle first. Thanks so much for your comments Regan.

Wowee. She used the square-in-a-square to such wonderful effect. Not something I would have expected in a quilt from the ’40s.
And what a wonderful series this is. I’m especially interested in the fact that you are featuring Canadian quilts. These certainly deserve to be singled out!
