What a successful arrangement.  My eyes are staying engaged as I look at this one.  The setting seems square, then again it seems to have more of a round feeling to it, and then the four full red setting squares help create the sense of a medallion.  Do your eyes dance around this quilt?

Enjoy!

Mariner’s Compass, Maker unknown, Massachusetts, about 1840, The Pilgrim/Roy Collection from The Quilts and Colour Exhibit, Boston Museum of Fine Art, 2014.

I shared this quilt in July after I had seen it at the exhibit in Boston, but I just had to include it here with the others because of the quiltmaker’s brave use of plaid for the setting fabric and how spectacularly it adds to the over all design. Bravo!

Enjoy!

Twelve Quilts of Christmas – #7

Stars and Flowers, 1859. Maker “E.F.” Wool embroidery on cotton. Probably Ohio. 93 x 76 in. Collection of Eleanor Bingham Miller, Speed Art Museum.

The unusual mix of embroidery and quilting sets this quilt apart, as does the delicate and balanced composition.

Enjoy!
