When I take an appliqué piece with me to work on while I travel, it’s handy to have a bunch of colours to choose from. I use a bobbin holder to carry bobbins filled with a good mix of colours and this is what it looks like:

I arranged them according to the colour wheel.
When visiting my god-daughter (who is 7 & 1/4 by the way!) she decided to re-arrange them for me. I like her categories: rainbow, chalk and dull!

We are waiting. Spring is thinking about springing … but still thinking about it apparently! There is an eight inch thick, 12 foot by 8 foot pad of ice on the driveway in front of my garage. The man across the street took out his axe to chop through the ice in the shade of his front lawn and pitch it into the sunshine on the street. Another neighbour broke out her kids bikes. Winter coats, winter boots and bikes … a new combination. I am Canadian. Weather is our thing. We talk about it. We survive it. Are proud of that. It has been a long winter, even by our standards.
When it was warm enough a few weeks ago (+1C) I was giddy about going to the car wash and delighted by the colour of the foamy soap in comparison to the grey scenery outside.

And I thank my stars for these beauties that brightened the days …

And these ….

It’s raining out now. +3C. The ice doesn’t know it but it doesn’t stand a chance.

It is such a joy to be hand quilting again.

Happy Stitching!
FEBRUARY 24, 2014
It has been a long winter here in Toronto.
Some scenes have been very pretty.

Mostly I have been a bear.
Hibernating.
Cocooned inside.
But not sleeping!

A sea of half square triangles getting ready for random matches! These are only a fraction of the “lights” for this quilt.
More about this project later!
In the meantime …
If you are going to be in the northwestern Washington state area, I will be teaching “Pumpkin Peel” and a “Small Quilts” class at Two Thimbles Quilt Shop in Bellingham, WA on April 12 & 13. I hope you will join us for lots of fun stitching! For more information you can reach the wonderful folks at Two Thimbles at 360-715-1629.
I will also be speaking at the Moonlight Quilter’s Guild, in Bellingham, on Monday April 14th.
And if you want to spend a week, getting absorbed in the glory of medallion quilts, I will be teaching at the Haliburton School of The Arts from June 16th to June 20th. Come discover the magic and traditions of this wonderful style of quilts while enjoying the peaceful shores of Bark Lake. You can find more information here.

Delicate and festive, this one reminds me of pine boughs. If you look again, do you see the flower in the middle! And the star!
Wishing you and yours a very warm Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
